What a LiDAR Detection-Range Specification Means

A published range is tied to its test target and environment. Learn how target reflectivity changes the stated distance, why range, accuracy, and frame rate answer different questions, and how to build a representative application test.

Range is tied to test conditions

A maximum range is a result under stated conditions, not a universal boundary for every installation. Target reflectivity, target size and angle, ambient light, temperature, mounting, and the sensor’s configuration can all affect whether a return is measured reliably.

Compare target conditions

The official TFA170-L datasheet lists a detection range of 0.1–170 m at 90% reflectivity and 0.1–70 m at 10% reflectivity. The difference is a useful reminder to compare the test target and footnotes alongside the headline range. See the official datasheet for the stated test conditions.

Keep range, accuracy, and frame rate separate

Range describes how far a target may be detected under specified conditions. Accuracy describes measurement error under its stated test setup. Resolution describes the reported distance step, while frame rate describes how often the sensor can provide measurements. One metric cannot stand in for another.

Build a test around the application

  • Use targets that match the expected material, size, and angle
  • Test the required distances under representative lighting and temperature
  • Check mounting, occlusions, output settings, and controller timing
  • Record missed returns and unstable readings, not only successful samples

Treat sensor range as one system input

A range specification is not a stopping distance or a safety rating. For mobile equipment, the control system must account for speed, load, latency, braking, blind areas, and the actual target set. Validate the complete system before making an application claim.
