How Line-Pattern LiDAR Measures an Area

A line-shaped beam broadens a sensor’s horizontal sensing region compared with a narrow point spot. Using TF-NOVA as a documented example, this article explains what the wider field of view means for robot sensing and what still needs system-level validation.

From a point spot to a line

A point-ranging sensor measures along a narrow optical direction. A line-pattern design spreads the sensing region across an angle, so an installation can observe a wider horizontal band without turning a single-point module into a full 3D scanner.

A documented example: TF-NOVA

Benewake’s 2024 release describes TF-NOVA as a line-pattern solid-state LiDAR using a linear infrared source. The official user manual lists a 14° × 1° field of view. This describes the geometry of the sensing region; it does not promise the same detection result for every target, surface, or installation.

Why installation changes the useful zone

On a mobile robot, mounting height, tilt, and orientation determine which floor edges and obstacles cross the sensing band. A wider horizontal field can help cover more of the path, while low objects, ramps, reflective surfaces, and occlusions still need checks at the intended mounting position.

Validate the whole detection chain

  • Map the beam against the required detection zone and blind areas
  • Test representative objects, surface finishes, angles, and ambient conditions
  • Measure sensor output, controller delay, and the machine response together

What a line pattern does not provide

A line-pattern measurement is not automatically a full point cloud, semantic object recognition, or a safety function. Application software decides how to interpret measurements, and the completed robot must be validated for its intended environment.
